Thanks to Disney, we are getting new Star Wars films every Christmas. Episode VIII: The Last Jedi comes out this December and next year we are getting Solo: A Star Wars Story. That’s the real Christmas miracle here, but what about the rest of the year? “How will I survive the year until that new Star Wars film?” Well lucky for you, we here at Rogues Portal have compiled a list of the best Space Saga Comics.

Bitch Planet

What Space Saga Comic list would be complete without Bitch Planet? A story about a “non-compliant” women who are sent to a prison planet, Kelly DeConnick said this book came out of a love for women in classic prison movies. It follows several women from their arrest to different experiences in prison.

An android boy tries to stay alive in a universe that’s outlawed all artificial intelligences. Bounty hunters live on each planet that TIM-21 visits in an attempt to learn about his origins. Its a new take on the man versus machine story. Oh and Dustin Nguyen is on art!

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps
We’ve seen a lot of the Green Lanterns on Earth. They do typical superhero stuff. This current run by Robert Venditti has focused on Hal Jordan’s space exploits as he reforms the GL Corps, teams up with the New Gods, and fights the Sinestro Corps. Its space-faring adventure at its finest.

How about a series about one of the greatest epics of all time, set in space? Homer’s Odyssey has been gender bent and thrown into a galactic adventure, featuring the same themes and plot elements. Matt Kindt deconstructs traditional male-centric stories, and analyzes what the world would look like by killing off men.

This is Romeo and Juliet in space. Except things mostly work out. And they’re adults instead of dumb teenagers. Their child narrates the series as they’re chased across the cosmos by their governments and bounty hunters. This series tackles a ton of social issues too, including politics, war, and racism. It involves magic, highly advanced technology, love, and sex. This is truly the definition of an epic.

Imagine if Han Solo and Chewbacca ran off to the outer rim because the Rebellion was crushed, and they took on whatever jobs they could. Han grew his crew out to include a mechanic, a doctor, a mercenary, an escort, and another pilot. Oh and Chewbacca is a human female. All the while they are wanted by the Empire. Welcome to the ‘Verse of the Firefly class ship Serenity.

Southern Cross
This one follows Alex Braith as she goes to the refinery on the moon to collect her sister’s remains and some answers. Like how did she die? Only instead of answers, Alex only finds more questions. Southern Cross is a galactic tale of horror, mystery and intrigue.

Star Wars
This one is a no brainer. Marvel has been releasing a ton of Star Wars comics. They’ve put out solo titles for Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Mace Windu, Princess Leia, and Poe Dameron alongside their regular Star Wars title which takes place after A New Hope. And then there’s back issues galore of Star Wars from Dark Horse. You want more Star Wars? Read Star Wars.

Valerian and Laureline
This comic is probably one of the most influential comics in science fiction. Influenced by classic science fiction literature, it has in turn influenced films like Star Wars and the Fifth Element. It had a lackluster film, but the comic is noted for its humour, humanist and leftwing liberal politics, and complex writing.

X-O Manowar
I’ve been describing this latest volume as Conan the Barbarian meets Star Wars. Its follows the Visigoth from Ancient Rome, Aric of Dacia, as he fights a war on an alien planet and rises through the ranks from soldier to emperor. His armour is the most advanced piece of technology in the galaxy, and it bothers him that it can talk back. Honestly you should be picking this up for the art alone.

That’s all I have for now. Happy reading!

Josh Rose
Basically a hobbit, Josh is always enjoying food and drink, and going on unexpected adventures. Beware if you see him without a cup of coffee: caffeination deprivation makes this boy go loco.
